Starks and Nacey EP

Those crazy cats, Steve Starks and Nacey, done did it this time... The debut EP from 2/3rds of the DC party machine Nouveau Riche is just what you would expect if you've ever been to one of their debauturous parties... party starting beats and thumping bass.

A little info about Starks and Nacey if you are unfamiliar:

"Starks & Nacey are two-thirds of Nouveau Riche, a monthly party in Washington, DC, started in 2006 by fellow DJ Gavin Holland. In 2008, the party was awarded “Best Dance Night” in the City Paper’s “Best of DC” issue, and the two have been described by the Washington Post as “some of the District’s more prolific DJs.” Starks & Nacey are known for their high-energy sets and have shared the stage with the likes of The Count & Sinden, AC Slater, Nadastrom, MSTRKRFT, Blaqstarr, Miami Horror, Scottie B and Eli Escobar to name a few. Their productions have won contests on Discobelle and Mad Decent, and recently appeared on Fool’s Gold label head Nick Catchdubs’s Australian Tour Mix. Their debut EP keeps things moving with an introduction to the duo’s distinctive styles, and their attitude of having fun in the club.”

Come see Starks and Nacey this sat. at the always fun Nouveau Riche at DC9 (9th and U NW)

I suggest you stop what you are doing right now and download this album:

Trey hints at Phish Reunion

In a recent Rolling Stone interview Trey is quoted as saying-

“When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”

While there is no concrete news of a Phish reunion... this is about the next best thing.

Super excited

Ratatat

I saw Ratatat last summer at the Summercase Music Festival in Barcelona. I really enjoyed their performance and subsequently acquired all of their albums. Since then I have really been looking forward to some new material from them. Well... it looks like new Ratatat is finally on the way. They just released a new 7' and a new album entitled "3PL" is set for release in July. Here is two new tracks to enjoy:

Radiohead

Just got back from seeing Radiohead twice this past weekend. On Friday, the weather was great and the tailgating was amazing... on Sunday the weather was awful but Radiohead made up for it by playing an extra special set. I was blown away yet again by the awesomeness of this band. Check out this video of fake plastic trees I shot from the pit at the Nissan Pavilion show:

I heard that this song was not in the original setlist and they played it as a treat for everyone that weathered the storm for the show. Watch Jonny Greenwood just destroy it about midway through.

Santogold - You'll find a way (Switch and Sinden Remix)

This is really tight. Awesome bass and kinda has a "bollywood" sound to it.

And here's excerpts from the press release...
Original Boardwalk Style, a live album from Trey Anastasio and the Undectet, will be released on June 10th on Trey's own Rubber Jungle Records. Proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative, established by Trey in 2006 to foster artistic development and support arts education in the state of Vermont.

The album was recorded at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ on December 30th and 31st of 2006, coming at the end of the band's holiday tour. The two shows marked the culmination of a long year of touring and growth as what began as a six-piece sextet in the beginning of the year had progressed into a full-force eleven member Undectet.

The raw energy of a well-oiled band at the top of its game permeated the set as the composer/vocalist/guitarist led The Undectet - comprised of Tony Hall (bass, vocals), Ray Paczkowski (keyboards), Jeff Sipe (drums), Christina Durfee (vocals, synthesizer), Jennifer Hartswick (vocals, trumpet), Peter Apfelbaum (saxophone, flute), Russell Remington (saxophone, flute), Jeff Cressman (trombone), Dave Grippo (saxophone) and Cyro Baptista (percussion) - through electrifying big band arrangements of his classic songs, replete with big horns and dazzling Brazilian percussive stylings.

Original Boardwalk Style features over 75 minutes of music, remixed from the multitrack masters by Trey and Ben Collette at Rubber Jungle Studios and mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering. In addition to CD and digital download formats, the album will be available as a double-gatefold, audiophile grade 180-gram LP Vinyl pressing.

The album is now available for pre-order as CD and Vinyl Trey's online store as well as digital audio downloads (in both MP3 and FLAC formats) at LivePhish.com. All pre-orders will automatically be entered to win a professionally printed photo - signed by Trey and esteemed photographer Jeff Kravitz - of the band on stage at the House of Blues. Color corrected by Jennifer Brown, it will be framed in barn board crafted by Lars Fisk, a creative contributor to The Barn's Artist-in-Residence program. Ten runners-up will receive autographed copies of the vinyl.

brings back great memories

This video of the Trey Anastasio Band from the inaugural Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival brings back a lot of really good memories for me. I can't believe that it has already been six years since this show. Trey and his huge band play a high energy set that is absolutely magical. This is one of the shows that I would love to go back in time and see again.

This song has been stuck in my head for a week straight

Sooooooo, that means it must kick ass...

Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (Soulwax Dub)

Prince covers Radiohead at Coachella

Last weekend, at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA, Prince was paid over $4,000,000 for his performance. He may have earned that money just with this one song. Prince does a pretty jaw-droppingly awesome cover of Radiohead's "creep" where he changes the lyrics around a lot and absolutely shreds it on guitar. I think this is an awesome cover and I would have really like to seen this performance. But, on a brighter note, I am seeing Radiohead twice next weekend so maybe I'll get to see the real version of this song ripped to shreds...

Ghostland Observatory

This album I have slept on. I remember hearing a couple of these songs a good while back and meant to get this album but never actually got around to it. I finally got a hold of the album and gave it a listen to it the whole way through. I really like this band and the gritty electro rock feel that this album has. This is truly the direction rock music is going in order to stay fresh and innovative. These guys are playing at Bonnaroo this year and they are on my list of "must see" shows. Here is their album:

Even More Freeland

I like this guy so much. I think it has to do with the fact that his music is a great compromise between electronica and rock. All of his mixes are based in a rock groove but are decidedly house music. This mix features some great breaks, some deep funky beats, and even dabbles in some trip-hop. This is from the Fabriclive series (essentially my favorite compilation series).

Review: Sasha + Digweed (4/5) DC

Sasha + Digweed last Saturday was nothing short of amazing. It started off slowly, but the energy kept building throughout the night with the climax coming at the very end of their set. Sasha and Digweed truly have mastered the art of dj'ing- not just from a technical standpoint but also from the fact that they controlled the flow and energy throughout the night to the point of mastery. The LCD screen they brought with them also was great. The visuals combined with the music made the two seem like some sort of sorcerers and the whole crowd was entranced by the magic they were spinning. Here is a video I made of some highlights of the night... Watch the end of it and see how energetic the crowd is:

Review: Widespread Panic (4/2) DC

I used to love Widespread. I mean... I really, really liked them alot. I have since cooled down on my passion for the "jam band" scene and have replaced it with an affection for all things electronica. I didn't know that Panic was going to be in town until the day before the show. I even debated whether or not I was even going to go see them. But, I decided to go and I am glad that I went. I really got into this concert. They "jammed out" pretty crucially and reminded me why I fell in love with music in the first place. The whole reason I think music is such a crucial aspect of my life is because I got to see bands like Panic and Phish when I was first learning about "real" music. I felt that same connection that I first felt and it was euphoric. I still am pretty stale on the whole state of rock music right now, but I truly enjoyed my night with panic. I really enjoyed the roots based jams that they threw down. The sound of an electric piano playing a honky tonk rhythm with an electric guitar soaring note after note brings me to a state of mental ecstasy. Although my love affair with rock has died down, I will always think of it like an ex-girlfriend and remember all the good times we shared.

Album - Global Underground 032: Mexico City

" 'GU 032 - Mexico City', Global Underground's exciting new double album by British DJ Adam Freeland, is an eclectic collection of energetic dance and dance/rock tracks. By not confining to the walls of one genre of music, 'Mexico City' not only makes for a dynamic album, but also a great indicator to Freeland's talent behind the decks. Titled around a sell-out gig he played at Club Continental in Mexico City, the double album is a great party mix and has the potential to be the strongest thing you'll need to get you going on a big night out.

CD one is an energetic mix which peaks early with full tracks like Revl9n's Walking and Freeland's own Silverlake Pills. Freeland drops plenty of layers into the tracks with vocals, beats and instrumentals like drums and grindy electric guitars. Freeland's ability to conduct all the elements into unique tracks transpires into an energy and enthusiasm that is contagious. While still retaining a unique style, each track bleeds seamlessly into one another, so you don't miss a beat. While this is great, it also means that you think you're listening to the same song when really you're three songs down in the play list. This is most likely due to Freeland's avoidance of overpowering vocals throughout the double album.

CD two is undoubtedly different from the first disc. The energy seems to drop, compared to the first CD, with tracks creating a more brooding and moody atmosphere and the pace feeling more like a wind down CD. While the mood is created in a way which is hard to put your finger on, CD two has a lot more 'live band' like elements, with minimal techno and energetic build ups. CD two does, however, have the hidden gem of Silversun Pickups' Lazy Eye, re-edited by Freeland. It's more rock than remix, has raw vocals, grindy electric guitar and more band elements than dance. It stood out as being obviously different from the other tracks on the whole album, being the only track to have vocals as the main element to the song. While oddly placed within the double album, it was the one track I just couldn't keep off repeat."

Tiger Woods

As you may or may not know, Tiger Woods is absolutely killing it right now. This is a cool quote from David Faherty (golf announcer dude) about Tiger:

"People have accused me of being so far up Tiger's arse that he can barely make a full swing, but I maintain that he is a special person. There's no one else on the planet who can do what he does or even think of doing what he does. I've often thought, instead of showing Tiger's reaction to a shot he's hit, we really should show the reaction of those around him."

But here is the next best thing. "I'm walking down the 18th fairway at Firestone Country Club with Ernie Els and Tiger, who has popped up a three-wood about 40 yards behind Ernie into some wet, nasty, horrible, six-inch rough," Feherty says.

"Tiger's cursing and taking clumps out of Ohio with his three-wood. And, of course, we're not showing this on TV because we want to be able to interview him later. Ernie and I walk past Tiger's ball, and it is truly buried.

"Ernie is tied with Tiger and he's in the middle of the fairway. I'm standing with Ernie and my microphone is open. Ken Venturi [in the CBS booth] sends it to me and I say, 'Tiger's got 184 yards with two big red oaks overhanging the green. He's got absolutely nothing. With a stick of dynamite and a sand wedge I might be able to move this ball 50 yards.

Steve Williams [Woods' caddie] tells me [with a hand signal] that he's using a pitching wedge.'

"Tiger takes his swing. Every muscle in his body is flung at the ball. It looks like he's torn his nutsack. The divot went as far as I could hit the ball. I've got my microphone at my mouth thinking, what the hell was that! The ball sails over the trees, lands behind the hole and
backs up to about six feet from the flag. I open my microphone and Ernie turns and says, 'F*** me!'

"My producer comes on in my earpiece and says, 'Was that Ernie?' I say yes. He says, 'Fair enough.'

"I could have described that shot for 15 minutes and not done as good a job as Ernie did with two words. This is the second best player in the world talking, and you wanna know how good Tiger is? Ask Ernie Els."

Crookers

Just like everybody that I know, I am infatuated with the sound of Crookers. So, I have compiled as many tracks of them as I could to share with all. Enjoy!

If you don't know about Crookers:

"Crookers consists of DJ PHRA and Bot, two gifted gentlemen from Italy who deliver bassy ass remixes of artists like Cazals, Bonde do Role, Dusty Kid, Armand Van Helden, and Chemical Brothers. They add a grungy electro bassline to just about everything they touch, which is one of the reasons I’m feeling their stuff. Crookers basically take a track and turn it into a dance floor killer and that’s all that really needs to be said."

New Nationals Stadium

Drove by this the other day- And, I must say that I am excited for baseball season to start! It's going to be fun to catch some games there this summer. It definitely looks like a vast improvement over RFK. Although, I will root for the Nats... the O's will forever be my team.

Review: Nouveau Riche (3/22)

Admittedly, I will never say a negative thing about Nouveau Riche (except for the few times I've complained because there are too many people there) but in regards to last weekend's Nouveau Riche, there is nothing negative to say. What a great night. Blaqstarr definitely killed it . Everyone I saw there had a great time. The place was nuts.
I can't wait till next month!

Bonnaroo artist additions: Teisto

Teisto has been announced as a addition to the lineup of Bonnaroo. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this. I have alot of faith in Superfly/ AC entertainment (who puts on Bonnaroo) and if they think that Teisto is worthy of a coveted latenight timeslot, than I sure he will kill it... But regardless, it should be worth checking out. Here is a hilarious Teisto video I found on YouTube:

Upcoming: All Points West Festival

(August 8-10)
This festival is featuring friday and saturday night headlining shows by Radiohead. To top that off, it's at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ with a view overlooking the skyline of downtown Manhattan. That alone is enough reason for me to go. But since it is a festival...there is going to be a ton of other great music to check out. Its like getting to see a Radiohead concert with a bunch of great opening acts for only about $20 more than a solo Radiohead show. Sounds awesome to me. Some of the other acts on the bill I'm excited to check out are: Underworld, Kings of Leon, CSS, Rodrigo y Gabriela, The Roots, Chromeo, and Animal Collective.

I'm especially excited to check out Underworld. I hear that they are amazing live. They also rarely play shows in the states. Here is a show of theirs from earlier this year in Rotterdam:

Review: Justice @ Sonar (3/9)

The Justice and DJ Medhi show was definitely worth the trip up to charm city (even on a Sunday night). Even though it was not the best thing I have ever seen... it was definitely a fun little trip. Everyone I went with had a great time.

Justice's set, while predictable- was still entertaining. The highlight for me was the Genesis intro. But the star of the night was Mehdi. He played a nice set (and even threw it some bmore club) and had the place jumpin' before the headliners took the stage... so jumpin' that a boy of mine now refers to him as his favorite DJ.

We stayed for the taxlo after party w/ Scotty B, which while also fun was a little bit of a let down cause Scotty B didn't really bring the heat. It was cool that Gaspard from Justice and Mehdi chilled out afterwards and were genuinely nice guys - even let me get a pic...

Here's some video I shot of the "Genesis" intro:

Upcoming: Sasha + Digweed @ ibiza (DC)

Are you ready to have your face melted by some truly psychedelic house music? If not, then don't go see Sasha + Digweed at Ibiza on April 5th. Probably the world's greatest DJ duo, sasha and diggers, are doing us a favor by playing at such a (relatively) small venue. I've never been to ibiza (the club) but I heard dem speakers is banging... I saw the fellas last year at bonnaroo and I'm still tryin' to put my face back together...

Here is an awesome Digweed mix: http://www.sendspace.com/file/qf9ulr

Here is a video I shot at S+D's 'roo set last June:
